About

Our Dear Author started this blog because she knew that the only way she was ever going to get to try meatless North Korean food was to make it herself.  She loves referring to herself in the third person and is also quite fond of the Royal We.  She lives in The Bronx with her two dogs.  When she is not blogging or cooking, she works as an Asian language translator.    Dear Author has absolutely no Korean heritage- she is 100% white/hakujin/baek-in/gwailo but she has an Asian studies degree and the musical tastes of a Japanese tween girl.    She can read hangul and listen to K-Pop lyrics but her Korean isn’t yet good enough to give inspring revolutionary speeches.   She enjoys fan mail and can be reached at juchevegan AT gmail DOT com.

    안녕하세요!
I’m from South Korea. It’s quite interesting to hear from not Korean about North Korean cuisine. I wish your project goes well!

  2. Pizza in Pyongyang – it’s not vegan but it is about food.

That’s funny, earlier today I was re-reading the Italian pizza story and ordering a copy of the Japanese chef’s memoir. I totally want to do modern Pyongyang food next!

  3. Get in touch with Josh, I sent some stuff back with him for you that I picked up in the DPRK 😉

    Dear Author,

My sincere compliments for your interesting blog! I have been a vegan since I was 19 years old, I will turn 27 in October. I will be visiting North Korea with my brother in August. My contact at the travel agency arranged that I can eat completely vegan. I guess I am one of the very few vegans to visit North Korea! Are you interested in photographs of the food?

    With kind regards,
    Marleen

Of course I am interested in food photographs!! I am so jealous that you get to go next month. As far as I know you will be the first vegan reader. Another reader who I met in the early spring is vegetarian and reported that his options were limited in comparison with the omnivores, but that they do make an effort so that you don’t starve! Have a great trip- can’t wait to see the photos!

Good to hear that you’re interested in vegan food photographs! I will try to photograph as much as possible. My trip begins today; I will send you an e-mail in about two weeks!

        With kind regards,
        Marleen
